Treating Your Dental Emergency

When faced with an unforeseen situation, it is difficult to determine what constitutes a dental emergency and what steps to take during this time. When significant dental pain or injury occurs, chances are you require immediate treatment.

We do all we can to prioritize emergency visits for patients experiencing the following complications:

Severe Tooth Pain -  typically involving sharp, throbbing, or constant pain, an intense toothache can be caused by a number of different reasons such as infection of the tooth’s nerve, inflammation, or other underlying oral health concerns.

Your treatment will be determined by the cause of your dental discomfort. If decay or cavities are the sources, our dentist will fill the cavity or extract if necessary. In the event where bacteria or infection it present, a root canal procedure will be performed to alleviate pain and save the tooth as much as possible.

Knocked- Out or Avulsed Tooth -  it is imperative that you seek treatment in the event of a knocked-out tooth. Be sure to handle the tooth by its’ crown without touching the roots to avoid possible nerve damage. Rinse the tooth clean making sure it is free of shards and debris. Keep it moist by dropping it into a glass of milk, or inserting it back into its socket until receiving assistance.

Fractured or Damaged Tooth – depending on the extent of the damage, the situation can wait until the following day if need be. We offer patients composite, natural-looking fillings and crowns as a reliable, long-lasting solution to address tooth chips, cracks, or fractures.

Lost Crown or Filling – if a restoration has become loose or dropped out of the smile, contact us right away. Keep the crown in a cool, safe place so that our dentists may have the chance of reinserting it. Dr. Summers  will make sure the prosthetic still fits properly in your smile, and if so, we will reattach it. If underlying infection or decay is detected, our Kamloops team will administer treatment and provide you with a new, custom-crafted restoration.
